There are LOTS of styles of cabinets. Beautiful cabinetry but it kinda boils down to these two.
Inset
And Overlay
Now there are tons of variations of these two.
Beaded Inset
That refers to the thin beading surrounding the opening.Who knew?
Flush Inset
See. No beading or trim around the opening.
Let's look at some kitchens to illustrate.
This beautiful kitchen features beaded inset cabinets.
You can really see the detailing in this close up
Another beaded inset kitchen. This one much more formal but just as lovely.
Note the construction detail.
Look at this built in utilizing inset cabinetry.
How gorgeous!
Now the overlay cabinets have many variations just like the inset.
The doors can have lots of detailing or can be fairly simple.
The commonality is that the doors lay over the cabinet opening rather than being set in the opening.
Let"s look at some kitchens featuring this style of cabinets.
This fabulous kitchen features overlay cabinets on the perimeter and inset on the island.
Look at the distressed finish on this island! AbFab!
Here's another kitchen featuring overlay doors.
This traditional kitchen has beautiful detailing on the crisp white cabinets.
What style cabinets do you prefer? The inset or the overlay? The inset is a bit pricier as you can well imagine the work that goes into making them. I do like the kitchens that incorporate both styles.Like this kitchen desk area.
That way you can put the inset doors on a feature cabinet or area like the island. Certainly something to ponder. Hmmm.

Girl you are covering every detail and without a doubt, your kitchen will be stunning!
Hi Lisa, great post to showcase cabinet design. Love this and I know your kitchen is going to be gorgeous. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day!! xo
I've always loved the beaded accent but it depends on the kitchen and home it's going into. All of your ideas here are really nice. How fun to be putting in a new kitchen! When we did our remodel in 1996 I went with stained wood and then everyone shifted to painted finishes.
Love the shade of sage green in that kitchen
Insets, would give another place to need to dust.

Every style you've shown is beautiful, Lisa. If if was me though, I'd have to say, I'd go for the easiest to clean. Boring, huh? ;)
No matter what you choose, It'll be lovely. And it's fun to ponder these decorative things.
hugs to you,
rue
Lisa, while I LOVE the ornate...I would probably select something simpler...but in a pretty color! Thanks for sharing about cabinets today...and thanks for the visit!!
Lisa all these kitchens are wonderful!
Have a nice Fiday
SO MUCH PRETTY!! I always said that I was one of those girls who should've had three wedding dresses and ten kitchens...how could you choose just one??? If only!! ;)
What lovely details and what gorgeous photographs, my dearest Lisa !
Is this your home ?
If so you live in a stunning cozy place, believe me !
With so much gratitude I wish you a wonderful end of your week, sweet friend,
sending love across the many miles

I am lucky to have beautiful cabinets, BUT... The builder moved things around in the kitchen (from the original blue prints) to make a huge island (we are the second owners). The island is great for huge parties, but the other 360 days of the year it drives me crazy how hard it is to use the microwave because it is under the counter. Also the oven faces the sink/dishwasher -traffic nightmare. Long story short...I think the layout is more important than the cabinets.
I love all of those cabinets choices! Have you settled on a color? You post was truly a joy to read and I hope that you will continue adding your ray of sunshine every week on Thoughts of Home on Thursdays.
