By now you've heard that The Hallmark Channel has cancelled The Martha Stewart Show.

I've no doubt that some other smart studio exec will snap her up. Oprah, are you listening?
I ,for one, am a bonafide Martha groupie. When I had wee ones at home and felt overwhelmed by the magnitude of making and keeping a home...there was Martha, calm and collected and just a bit stand-offish. She was like the perfect Home Ec. teacher. The home arts were no laughing matter , but if you paid attention she could help you with everything from making the perfect cake

to vegetable gardening

to organizing your kitchen.

Who knows, maybe they'll bring back the old show's format, remember? No audience, just Martha...baking, gardening, decorating, getting out stubborn stains, showing us exactly how to fold a fitted sheet. I much prefer her in that setting. I could never buy into Martha being chatty and engaging. Just like your favorite teacher, you wouldn't want to get too close. It ruins the mystique of it all.No I liked Martha by herself, taking me on field trips to dairy farms and museums, inviting me into her kitchen at Turkey Hill while she whipped up a sweet perfection, smiling, cordial and just a bit aloof. That was Martha at her best.

Folly Beach

Folly Beach is a story of personal triumph amidst great loss and proves what I have always suspected. You're never too old and it's never too late to love again.
Ms. Frank's novel parallels Cate's storyline alongside the Heywards. Any fan of musical theatre will enjoy the behind the scenes glimpse of the making of a Broadway hit.
Despite the sometimes serious subject manner this is a fun read (especially for those of us around Cate's age) and got me Googling George Gershwin and The Heywards. I even discovered that there is a new Broadway rendition of Porgy and Bess starring Audra McDonald.

Well, read Folly Beach and rent Porgy and Bess. Or better yet, read Folly Beach and go see Porgy and Bess. New York is lovely in the spring.

Do It Yourself Scratch-Offs!

Love is in the air.

Valentine's Day that is and nobody does it better than Better Homes and Garden magazine.

The February issue features so many fun projects to do for (and with) your family

but this one ,in particular, really caught my eye

It's a do it yourself scratch off! The magic scratch off solution is two parts metallic acrylic paint to one part dishwashing liquid. They painted it on clear Con-tack Paper and then cut the heart shapes. Isn't this fun? You could use it for invites and door prizes for a school fund raiser or your own pool party please come's. Mr. Barclay is so adept at his beautiful descriptions of the cottage I felt like I would know it, should I happen upon it.

No this isn't it, but it ought to be!
I loved reading about the cottage with its pink quartz fireplace and crackling fire, the stateside French cafe and Greg's purple coneflowers.There are even recipes included that the character Chelsea's grandmother created, each charmingly named after an Allied war hero.
I enjoyed More Than I Can Say very much and would highly recommend it! It's that perfect combination of love story/mystery with a dash of history thrown in for good measure. This would be a good book to read on a snowy day in front of a roaring fire. Watch the weather report and go get your copy...Quick before the storm hits.

Thirty two years ago Vivian Palazzi began a craft project that has become a family heirloom.

She turned a simple store bought sheet into a tablecloth, complete with lace trim. Anyone who joined her family for dinner would sign the tablecloth and perhaps leave a message. Later Vivian would embroider the signature, creating a lasting legacy.

This story, in the November issue of Country Living, so touched me. Vivian was 53 when she began this journey. I turned 53 a couple of weeks ago. It's fate I tell you! So I'm off this morning to buy a simple white tablecloth and start my own tradition!

Last Saturday I was able to catch an episode of HGTV's Dina's Party. The episode featured 2 friends who decided to go in to business together making accessories. Dina helped them throw a tres chic (and a tad shabby) launch party.

Their company Oak Lane Designs is named after the street they both live on. Is that not the cutest? They sell their repurposed treasures on etsy and I thought you might enjoy seeing their wares.:)

Are you busy Ladies? I am so busy right now I have neglected my blog and all my sweet blog friends.:( Son #1 is leaving next week for William & Mary Law School. We have been furiously shopping because it would seem he now needs EVERYTHING. Week after that Son #2 will be heading back to OU (and a new apartment) with Mom & Dad's help because his car can not possibly hold all his STUFF. I have since laid down the law. What goes on in Oklahoma must now forever stay in Oklahoma. We are renting him a storage unit. Baby girl Daughter #2 just got her driver's license! Whoo-Hoo!!! I won't bore you with stories of the drama surrounding the DMV, but suffice it to say I have a whole new set of gray hairs following that experience. Enjoy this peaceful pic of a beautiful Southern Living porch and know that I am thinking of you all and will be back soon.:)

A Fisherman's Secret

Did you know that fishermen use Victoria's Secret's Amber Romance fragrance to ward off mosquitoes? And if you did how come you didn't tell me? My sweetheart daughter (the perennial grad student) lives in NOLA and takes a daily run through Audubon Park (where the skeeters are as big as blue jays). Since her discovery and usage of Amber Romance no bites! She uses the lotion but I think any of it will do.
PS It is so hot ,here in Texas, that I think the mosquitoes are experiencing spontaneous combustion. They are not alone. Between the hot flashes and these triple digit temps I myself am a mere puff of smoke.:)

This was my first matchbox swap and I had such a fun time with it! Here's what I sent my partner.

I glittered a vintage spoon and covered the box with paper roses and coffee dyed doilies and filled it with teeny tiny treats.

And boxed it up and sent it to New Jersey!

What fun! I can't wait to do it again!

He Came, He Saw, He Graduated

This past Saturday morning ,in a sea of green, #1 Son graduated magna cum laude with a History degree from the University of North Texas.

Now it's on to William & Mary Law School.

My sister and I are planning a little road trip to go decorate the college abode. I'm so looking forward to visiting Williamsburg!

Caroline deals with all these goings on with southern grace and the help of her dear friends Millie and Miss Sweetie. Of course there is a little late night romance with a sexy beau, or two to help her take her mind off her troubles.
Ms. Frank's novel is a fun, easy read perfect to take along to the lake on a long weekend. It would also be a fun book club selection, especially if the hostess can make shrimp and grits!

Princess Cupcakes

I found this cutie cupcake kit at Barnes & Noble's the other day so I decided to adorn my Easter cupcakes princess style!

If you have a little princess of your own, she will love these sweet toppers!

Here's the recipe I used courtesy of Paula Deen.
1 yellow cake mix
1 cup sour cream
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup flour
3 eggs
1/2 teas vanilla
!/2 teas butter ext
1/2 teas salt
Preheat oven to 350.Beat for 2 min w/ electric mixer. Divide evenly in muffin tins lined with cupcake liners. Bake for 20-22 min.
Frost with homemade buttercream icing.

Today I'm hosting a TLC Book Tour for Dana Precious' Born Under a Lucky Moon.

Jeannie Thompson has a family full of nuts. They are engaging nuts, loyal nuts, loving nuts but they are nuts. And that being the case, Jeannie would much rather keep the nuts away from her boyfriend...who just proposed.
As luck would have it, most of the nuts live in Michigan and Jeannie lives in L.A. where she is a marketing executive with a semi-major film studio. It's enough that she has to deal with psycho film stars who want Belgian water flown in on their film set or to take Air Force One for a spin. Puh-leeze! Now her sweetheart of a boyfriend is asking to meet her nutty family. What to do? What to do?
I loved reading and learning about Michigan. The author very skillfully manages to weave wonderfully interesting trivia about life along the Great Lakes into her sweet novel. Now I'm wanting to spend Spring Break on Muskegon Lake and learn the fine art of fly fishing! And Dana's depictions of the Thompson's family life with all the sisters crowding into one bathroom, bedroom accomodations that play out like musical chairs and the escape artist shenanigans of Buddy the dog left me smiling as I reached for the phone to call my own sister.
I highly recommend Born Under a Lucky Moon. It is a feel good story about love and families and the ties that bind.

What David Tutera Has Taught Me About God

My youngest daughter and I do not miss WE TV's My Fair Wedding starring David Tutera.

David is a wedding planner to the stars and on the show a lucky bride receives his services with one catch...HE chooses everything! Yikes! She must trust him to act in her best interest. He sits down with each bride and listens to her vision for her wedding. And some of them have some way out visions! Everything from Alice in Wonderland to frogs. Then they show him what they've planned thus far. When I tell you some of that stuff is a hot mess I mean it is one hot mess!!! He patiently takes it all in and then goes to work. The catch phrase of the show is, "Every bride has a vision, David has revisions." And boy does he. He gives her what she wants and things she didn't know she wanted.

Isn't this just like The Lord? We pray, telling Him what our vision is for our lives , our careers, our families. He listens, patiently taking it all in. Then he goes to work... The Ultimate Planner. We think we want to pursue one career path until our professor recommends a certain class and everything changes. We are dating one guy when we meet another at a friend's wedding and everything changes. We think we want all girls until that little bundle in a blue blanket is placed in our arms and everything changes. Yes we have a vision for our lives and God has revisions. We pray and trust Him to act in our best interest. I know in my own life He has given me some things I wanted, shielded me from some things I thought I wanted and blessed me with things I never ever knew I wanted.

Copycat Laundry Detergent

Because I heart Liz and Karen and because I am a big ole' copycat I too made a batch of Mary Jane's homemade detergent!
Of course I had to make it pretty so I painted and decoupaged a chipboard hatbox using my friend Linda's amazing Rose Coop Farm artwork.

I made Linda some, too!

I used the Zote Soap in mine and that made it so pretty and pink! Mind you I bought the Zote MONTHS ago and only when I saw Liz and Karen make theirs did I finally feel compelled to action. With all of our snow days I finally got to watch Secretariat. This scripture was quoted at the beginning and the end of the movie. It was so powerfully beautiful it gave me chills! If you haven't yet seen the movie (I may have been the last hold-out) it is a great family movie with wonderful life lessons in it.

For the third time this new year we have a snow day in the Dallas area. Last week our snow day lasted all week! The thespian and I have made and eaten red velvet cupcakes,a new quiche recipe and various soups, stews and other savory homemade concoctions. We have internet surfed and shopped. We have schlepped around all day in our assorted cold weather jammies and played every board game ever created by Milton Brothers. Enough is enough. If Spring doesn't get here soon the Goodyear blimp won't have anything on me!

I was so excited to show you this house!

I remember seeing it in a local shelter publication probably 10 years ago. I saved that magazine for years! The designer was Lisa Luby Ryan and the design is still as beautiful and current as it was 10 years ago. Good design is timeless.

Snow Day

This was the view out my back door today.

And because the boys are still home from college and we don't get many snow days in Texas we stayed in and taste tested the new flavored marshmallows, in hot chocolate of course. BTW- It was a tie between the gingerbread marshmallows and the French vanilla.:)
I also made this super easy banana bread.

Sorry I didn't take this picture.Yep. Copy and paste.What can I say. It was a snow day.

1 yellow cake mix
1 egg (I used 2)
1/2 cup milk
1 cup mashed bananas
1/2 cup chopped pecans

In a mixing bowl combine cake mix, eggs and milk. Add bananas; beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in pecans. Pour into 2 geased loaf pans. Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes. cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans.

Marking Time

I think I might just be the original calendar girl. The new year officially begins for me when I hang the calendar. It must be a throw back to when my children were small and I was keeping up with ballet classes, basketball practice and orthodontist appointments. Mind you this was before IPAD's and really sophisticated cell phones. I used plain old Sharpies and sometimes stickers. The calendar helped me keep 4 children and one husband promptly organized. Not to mention I loved (and still love) all the wonderful choices!

My sweet son bought me this

for Christmas. I have devoured it I tell you! This beautiful coffee table book chronicles Ms. Streisand's building of a guest house/barn on her Malibu property.

The barn red exterior is quite striking.

The whole basement level of this outbuilding holds Barbra's collected treasures and keepsakes showcased in a Main St. storefront type setting. Very clever!

And please don't overlook her spectacular garden!

The book is just gorgeous and I really enjoyed Ms. Streisand's attention to detail and her pursuit of her architectural dream. Fascinating!

sequel to Very Valentine is chick lit heaven! It begins in Tuscany at the wedding of our heroine Valentine's eighty year old grandmother. And because we're talking about the Roncallis and the Angelinis hilarity and a scattering of tears ensues.

Brava, Valentine follows Valentine Roncalli as she struggles to grow her family's business, the Angelini Shoe Company, into a major contender, play nice with her recently downsized banker brother now working with her at ASC, and counsel, console and otherwise corral various sisters, friends and ex-boyfriends all while her gay best friend Gabriel redecorates the brownstone they now share. Exhausted yet? (BTW Gabe, the zebra loveseats with the turquoise silk drapes sound divine!) What's more, she may have found the love of her life. Maybe.
Ms. Trigiani's novel will have you laughing out loud and crying real tears (really) all while endearing you to a family that is perhaps much like your own. This book speaks to family and forgiveness, love and loss and you will find yourself cheering for Valentine through it all.

Was it easy to be the wife of Martin Luther, the reformer? Perhaps not. At times Katherine Luther may have wished herself back in the convent, as bleak as that was. However, through strange circumstances, she had cast her lot with Luther.
As a nun cloistered in an order that forbade her to speak to others, katherine heard of Luther's reform activities. Twelve nuns asked for his help to escape from the nunnery. He agreed to help them- and free them he did. He promptly married off all but one ex-nun, Katherine. At her suggestion, she and Luther married.
Luther, at age forty-one, was said to be set in his ways. Redheaded, feisty, twenty-six year old Katherine proved up to the task. She tended the gardens, managed the livestock, raised six children, cared for her often depressed spouse, and welcomed the many guests who came to confer with her famous husband. It can be said to her credit: Katherine made a home for her family.
Whether you're a single mom, a career woman, or married with children, you, too, can with effort, prayer, and a cheerful demeanor, take the wood and cement of a house and make it a home where your family and friends feel safe and loved.

I'm back and none the worse for wear! My bath has been cleaned up and patched up, primed and painted and restored to her former glory. I didn't make any changes, as we plan to move soon to our grown-up house so same soft peach walls and taupe trim. I did however find a fun website I wanted to share with you.
