A Thread of Sky is such a love story.
When Bill Shen is killed in a car accident it sends his wife Irene and three daughters into a tailspin. In desperation, Irene plans a trip to mainland China with the three generations of her family, her daughters, her sister and her mother.
It would seem that mothers try to give their daughters what they themselves are lacking. Trying to make up for a deficit unknown to their daughter.
Irene's mother endeavored to give Irene and her sister Susan independence, for she had known the chaos of revolution and betrayal from the man she loved, at a time when the options for women were few.
Irene had chosen motherhood over her promising career. She poured herself into her daughters, lavishing them with love, creating the stable home needed to build their strength and character.
Nora, Kay and Sophie are young women at the crossroads that meet every young woman. Love, commitment, careers and the need within to leave their mark on the world.
Each woman bears secrets and heartache that shape who she is and what she wants. As the walls come down and the secrets come out they rediscover themselves and the mother who loves them.
This is a beautifully written novel that you will want to share with your mother or daughter.
